What's got you hooked?
Unhooking, disrupting and stepping into creative leadership
Gut hooked is a term used by catch and release fishermen. It is a condition where the fish swallows the hook, which becomes lodged in the gut. The fisherman can choose to cut the line or to pull the hook out. If the hook gets pulled out, the fish usually dies as the hook is designed not to come out once it is in–the guts come out with the hook and the fish dies.
If you want the fish to have a chance at life there really is no choice, but it is a choice-with a known outcome. It is the first choice: cutting the line–the unknown. We have no idea what will happen–will the fish absorb the hook or will the hook just sit in there not causing any problems while the fish swims around for the remainder of its life without an issue.
This morning I was feeling into a belief that is lodged in my system-just like that fish with the hook in its gut. It is a money/abundance belief and I could feel it like a line (a rather strong one) that seemed to come from outside of me, into my mouth through my throat, down through my heart and into my gut. I started thinking about being gut hooked by this belief–and so began this post.
I feel the pull to the outside and it is a power drain. I am attached to something “out there.” Maybe I yank or maybe I cut, either way I see it, know it, and want to release myself from it.
Can I do the necessary psychic surgery that is required for the removal of this hook? A metaphorical dilemma that is felt in my system. I feel literally hooked into a global system of finance based on survival. A system where we must claw our way to the top of some unseen heap. Beating out others to scramble up to grasp at one piece. The only piece. A limited supply. For those at the top, those who made it, one way or another. Those who will not lend a hand but will stand there and watch you struggle to the top or even push you down if you get too close.
This system is based on survival of the fittest. But what if your set of circumstances, who you are, how you are isn’t what the ones at the top deem necessary for the survival of the all? I guess you just starve or suffer or spend your life trying to climb up that hill, only to get pushed right back down.
Maybe you discover in your quest for the top that there is a better way to win for yourself. You begin to play the game in a way that allows you to create a top for yourself and allure others to follow you to this top that you declare is the top. You begin to reap the benefit while the same thing happens. Maybe you are now a separate mountain top and you have started a new game. But the rules are the same. You didn't create anything new. You just found a way for you to win. The game continues in the same way, just in a different place.
Then I thought about the New Earth.
What is the New Earth?
I thought, it is a mind set. It is created by the transformation in our thinking. We will not change the current paradigm by playing the same game to get ahead, or survive.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

This is where imagination and creativity become super heroes! Creativity cultivates the space of the imagination. Engaging in writing, painting, creating anything, even day dreaming is a creative act flexes the imagination to innovate. The imagination is the fertile soil where the New Earth begins. Energy first.
This new way of thinking is the combination of holism and holarchical thinking- seeing each other as one another. Belonging to the same tribe–what you do to get ahead puts someone else behind or holds them back. What if this someone you are holding back was your brother, your sister, your mother or best friend?
When we bring this thinking home, do we want to play this game? If I act on my own, choosing what is only for me to feel good, or superior or to ‘get ahead’, and it has a negative effect on my husband, is it worth it?
If, let’s say, I decide to evade paying taxes–this will effect the whole of those on disability or medicare or medicaid or social security. I am pretty sure we know people in our lives, people who are close to us that need this service to live. Is this how we shall play the game?
I am sat here feeling this hook within me as I write all of this It has got me thinking in ways I hadn’t before or if I had thought this I certainly didn’t write it out and share it. And, at the same time, I want to make this hook disappear, but how? And what will happen when I do?
Will I be on the outside of a familiar way of being? And how will that feel?
Will my judge take over and make others wrong when I see the injustice in the world? Or will I retire that judge and embrace the injustice as part of a system that is in mid transformation?
Can I find a way to release this hook and connect with all those around me, in the way I wish we could meet each other? As one another. I look at you and see me and wonder, how can I cut you off to go first? To get angry and vengeful to make sure you suffer for your ignorant act that was probably a mistake?
I can employ compassion and I can spread that out to you, generously. Being as the way I imagine the New Earth forming. We are the creators of it. We are the ones who will make these changes.
Not those in charge. Not those who want to follow. Those who are willing to stand for things like love and generosity and compassion fiercely, with passion. And ‘be’ that.
This is not a time for those of us who practice spirituality to turn the other way and act as though none of what is going on is not going to bring you down. It will in fact, take you out. All of us.
If we are to be “spiritual” we must include as we transcend.

There is so much we took hook line and sinker …for granted as true. I was recently talking with my sister and her partner about how the system is we spend money to pay for essentials. There’s no use in being mad that the money is spent.
If we take a step back, write out what we care for, value, want to see in the world …and then spend in that direction can we see that investment of thought, time energy expand. Bring in more?
I say this as I am building something …it’s requiring intention, time and money…
Frustrated it isn’t building faster and … knowing everything has its time.
So can we metabolize the hook we swallowed and build, grow and thrive? Can we move from health and safety from a place of fear, enough to move into anchored and expanding?
These are interesting times to let go and create in.
